I see on social media that we, in the UK, are collectively shocked and disgusted by ‘the Russia Report*’ We howl into our ‘whats happening’ boxes and think we have done our bit for activism. We sit back and rub our hands together saying’ well, that showed them’
Except, obviously, it didn’t. It achieved nothing. No petition, no march and no protest will ever be met with more than some prepared statement full of hollow platitudes. We have allowed ourselves to be led into a position where politicians are untouchable. They fuck us all into the ground and we barely even register on their consciousness. There are no mechanisms, worthy of the name, that will allow us to remove them from office. No ‘public outrage’ will raise more than a chuckle behind closed doors. They will ride out the manufactured outrage until the next diversion comes along.
This is our fault, we let this happen.
Electing a new government, of a different colour or political stripe will not change anything. They will fuck us using a different ideology. It isn’t in the interest of any opposition party to change the system to bring in an era of accountability, where a corrupt politician goes to prison from misappropriation of public funds. They will not change it because once they are elected they will want to stick their snout deep in the trough too, and they, like the incumbents, will want to get off scot-free.
If we turn to civil disobedience they will unleash the army or the police on us, saying it was in the ‘public interest’ and all the while we turn on each other over often trivial differences.
I have no solutions, well none that would be palatable for most people.
*substitute the latest outrage.
Seems a good plague is in order. Hmm, that may be a “too soon” statement,

A very accurate observation and well said. I think it’s one of the reasons that apocalyptic stuff holds so much fascination for me.

Did anyone think that if they put them all in prison they could renovate the houses of parliament?
