During the Rebecca Riots the 4th Light Dragoons were sent to Newcastle Emlyn.
Trooper John Kearns, drowned in this river while swimming. He is buried in the local church.
His epitaph:
‘He fell not in the battle strife, nor on the sultry plain. Death did not meet the Warrior there, nor on the stormy main. But there, in Tivy’s winding stream, on sunny summer’s day, where bathing peacefully he sank, his spirit passed away. Mourn reader, with his comrades mourn, o’er one so young and brave, and trust in Him whose mighty arm from endless death can save.’

The ruins of the Castle

Probably built by the Welsh lord Maredudd ap Rhys in about 1240. It changed hands many times over the years in battles between the Welsh and English, and during the English Civil War. The remains of the gatehouse and adjacent towers, and some fragments of wall are all that remain visible now.
